8 Ways To Get The Party Started

When one attends a party, one expects to have fun! No one likes a dull party! The host or hostess invited you, but maybe they could use some help to get the party started. Maybe it's your own party and you aren't sure how to get the party started.

Here are some of my suggestions. They might not be traditional ways. You might think some of the ways are not for adult parties, but you'll be surprised at how much fun you could possibly have!

LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem

Karaoke Singing!

You probably thought that karaoke singing was yesterday's good time. NO! Karaoke is still fun! Have an assortment of different genre's of music available for your guests to select from.

Also supply an extra microphone for duets. Some people won't sing alone, but will sing their hearts away with a partner.

Musical Chairs

Chicago Flash Mob Dance

Table Dances!

Strip Poker!

Yes Strip Poker! Near the entrance of the party have large totes or bowls filled with many props, costumes and accessories!

Have the guests wear as many items as they want and start playing poker! You didn't think I actually meant to STRIP their clothes! Did you? This game could go on for hours!

Spike The Punch!

Add some liquor of choice to the party punch and have a blast!

Or better yet inform the guests that the punch is spiked and watch them think they are drunk when in reality they are having fun being alcohol-free!

Musical Chairs!

We are NEVER too old for musical chairs! Well, if there is a chance you could break a bone then you might want to pass on this game. If you are overly intoxicated you might also want to pass, being dizzy might make you want to puke.

I can be brutal with musical chairs and I like to win! Set up the chairs using one less chair than amount of players. Turn up the tunes. Walk around the chairs. Turn off the music, last one standing is out of the game, also remove a chair. Repeat the process until there is one chair left with the winner sitting in it! Have fun!

Flash Mob!

Place someone in charge of choreographing the flash mob! Depending on the number of guests, or how large the dance area is you might need a large outdoor area.

Watch YouTube videos beforehand to get an idea of how flash mobs have previously been done. Be sure you have this videotaped to add your creation to YouTube!

Table Dances!

WARNING: Be sure the tables are stable! This game could be dangerous if not done appropriately or if the dancer is a bit tipsy.

The dances could easily be done sober, if you have the nerve. You might actually get $1 tips if you are really groovy! Watch the video to get some ideas from a two year old Brazilian boy who can move like jagger!

FOOD FIGHT!

Who doesn't like a good food fight?! It doesn't have to be messy, just entertaining!

  • Jello (assorted colors)
  • Cool Whip (Reddi-Whip)
  • Popcorn (butter is optional)
  • Peanut shells (eat the peanuts first)
  • Mashed potatoes (one of my favorites to toss!)

Have towels and showers available for the guests!

Tell Jokes!

Have a microphone available. Each guest has the opportunity to share a joke or two with the other guests. Depending on the age group this could be lots of fun! Raunchy jokes are always entertaining.

After the jokes are all told guests could do voice animations of their favorite cartoon characters!

I hope these tips help get one of your parties started! If you have any additional ideas to add please do so in the comment section below. Thank you! It's time to get the party started!

Sunshine....Sometimes I wonder how many extra wheels you have spinning in that pretty head of yours! If I was a betting woman, I'd bet you spent a whole lot of time "in the Principal's Office," as a kid. Since you're also very convincing, I can just imagine the trouble your friends got into, following your lead! Mashed potatoes?? Whipped Cream??...WHO is on "clean-up committee??" I'm on the music committee....when's the party??

Looks like your parties are a lot of fun. I think good music and Karaoke is my best way of getting a party on its way.

We would have games such as getting all the guys to roll up their trowser legs and sit in a line, while the blindfolded wives/partners had to feel all of the knees and say which was her husband/partner. This was a lot of fun and brought a lot of laughs.

A great fun hub

@nell that would be my non-spiked punch! It would be TOO funny to watch the guests as they THOUGHT they were drinking! It will show others how much fun can be had without alcohol!

I am planning to give my 83 year old father a surprise party in two weeks. Maybe I'll have the guests, including Dad, play musical chairs. That might be interesting to watch. :)

Great hub!

HI Kathleen, While musical chairs is an absolutely amusing game, I'd be extra careful with your father and his party guests. I hope his party is a smashing success!:)

Kathleen Kerswig profile image

Kathleen Kerswig Level 4 Commenter 4 months ago

I think we might just stick with music playing without the game. Thank you for your good wishes. I'm sure it will be fun. He is going to be visiting from up north and he doesn't know anyone here so it will be a true surprise. :)

Great ideas! I love the song by Pink. We often do karaoke at my Christmas parties. Lots of fun. We also do door prizes, sometimes, which is fun. Flash mob and musical chairs are a great idea, too! Great hub. Lots of votes and up!

Very intriguing party ideas, Linda, but the Musical Chairs and Table Dances ideas should be utilized only for very young party-goers (under the age of 12). Otherwise the hostess' liability exposure is tremndous. Trust me. Those older folks often injure body parts when they fall!

Karaoke singing never fails to get the party started. Problem is, after one or two cocktails it's impossible to get the mic off me LOL. It might be ok if I could sing...

Pole dancing is also good if you don't have a table and well I guess if you have to keep your clothes on, a good time will still be had by all. LOL.

We played musical chairs at a neighborhood party a while back. It got pretty cut-throat, but no actual injuries, fortunately. : )

Sunshine625 profile image

Sunshine625 Hub Author 2 months ago

I love playing musical chairs. There should not be an age limit on this game, as long as you could walk you could play. I'm glad there were no injuries Deb! You are correct the game could be cut-throat!:)

Sunshine625 profile image

That's what makes the party more fun Jimmy! We get to laugh at the guests who could hopefully also laugh at themselves:)

these are fun tips, Linda. I like the idea of the placebo effect with the punch bowl. i will definitely try that next time!

Cyndi10 profile image

Cyndi10 Level 7 Commenter 8 weeks ago

Great tips for parties. I don't think Karaoke ever goes out of style. Some of the worst singers think they are the best singers (that would be me :-) and make for lots of fun! Especially if your guests can laugh at themselves (that would be me :-) Thanks for sharing.

El Ray profile image

El Ray Level 2 Commenter 8 weeks ago

After spiking the punch, it will be much easier to get the party started! If you make enough of it, spiked punch can be more cost-effective than buying individual bottles of booze, wine, etc. Just be sure to relieve all drivers of their car keys when they arrive. Karaoke is a lot of fun, but if your guests really want to shake it up ... get a DJ or two. If that's outside of your budget or none of your guests have DJ skills, burn some CD's with your favorite dance tracks.

Voting this up + awesome!

Sunshine625 profile image

Sunshine625 Hub Author 8 weeks ago

Have fun PDX, I would have thought you would take on the Karaoke! Haha!

Cyndi, You comment was too funny!! I want to meet you at a party now!!:))

El Ray, A D.J. or burned CD's is a fabulous addition to get the party started!! Thank you for adding them to the list! I agree the punch would be cheaper than bottles of booze, but I was suggesting we prove that one could have fun without alcohol!:)

Thank you for your getting the party started comments!!

Linda, these are all great ideas but you left out the best one of all. Number one should read:

1. Invite Linda Bilyeu to your party!
