This letter was written during the Casey Anthony trial...
Dear Mr Baez,
I understand you have a job to do. You've been hired by Casey Anthony as her defense attorney. You will receive compensation by the Orange County taxpayers to perform your duties as a public defender. We are now into the second week of the trial. My question to you is, when will you actually start doing your job. The majority of the accusations you have made against the state's witnesses are blatant lies and fabrications. Your repeatedness of questions aimed at the witnesses are out of control.
I am not a legal advisor. I did not go to law school. But I am a John Grisham fan. Most importantly is that I am a person with common sense. My common sense is telling me that something is very wrong with your tactics. I am a firm believer that when anyone hires a professional to perform a job for them, they deserve the best. Granted you are defending a person who is guilty as sin which makes your task more difficult, but even Casey Anthony deserves a better defense than what you are offering.
As a person with an over abundance of common sense I'd like to offer some tips. I hope you take my tips into consideration, if not for this trial but just in case you EVER get hired again by another criminal.
1. Do not shuffle your papers while standing at the podium. We were all taught by the age of ten to always be prepared. As a "professional" you should enter the courtroom with all files needed for the day. I advise you to stop wasting the courts time with your trivial requests for a break to hunt a file down.
2. Do not ask a grieving grandmother if she THINKS her obviously deceased granddaughter might still be alive. I highly doubt that even a seasoned professional could ask something so mean and callous. Do you leave your heart at home? Surely you must feel something for the distraught family. Again I understand you are doing your job BUT there is a line to be drawn.
3. Never, ever interrupt the judge while he's speaking to you, that's disrespectful and personally I think you should be in contempt of court and should be been fined. Judge Perry is obviously a man of patience.
4. Do not accuse the grieving grandfather of sexual abuse just because your client has no chance in hell of winning this case. That's just ludicrous. I'd like to know the brainchild behind that accusation just so I could slap them upside the head.
5. Do NOT use the theory that Caylee drowned due to statistics of Florida drownings among children. YES unfortunately the state of Florida has a high statistic rate for drowning BUT to attempt to get away with that theory will not work. Evidence proves against it. Nice try though.
6. Speak into the microphone, do not mumble, that's annoying. Again we were taught at an early age to speak clearly and to have your voice heard. Mumbling and stumbling are not allowed, keep in mind millions of people are watching this trial. Speak coherently and try your best to finish a sentence without talking in circles. Haven't we been tortured enough these past few years listening to Sarah Palin. Ugggh.
7. Enough of the cocky smirks. You might be thinking you are all that but in actuality after this case is over chances are you are cooked. You might be the most talked about public defender at the moment, but if you REALLY think about it....are those conversations a positive thing? I think not.
8. Fact: Casey Anthony hired you via a reference while she was in lock-up....need I say more? Your prior clients weren't exactly part of an elite crowd, but this case isn't about them.
9. Do not repeatedly ask the same question from a witness, hoping for the answer you want. They answered correctly the first time, it's highly doubtful their answer will change. There is no need to be hostile and rude to the witnessess. Think Karma!!
10. Please stop telling your client to sob on cue. It's obvious to all viewers what's going on. You two are actually a perfect match. You think this is all about you. Your client thinks this is all about her. You are both sadly mistaken. This is all about Caylee.
11. An insanity plea is not going to work, your client is a liar not insane. A mistrial is not going to happen due to remorse. Move on....do your job.
12. You've been litigating this trial for the past three years....seriously?? This is the best you came up with after three years. It might be time to consider a new line of work. Just sayin'.
This trial is a circus and you just keep throwing peanuts at the jury. The jurors are doing their civic duties and deserve a medal for that. They have families, friends, they have a life they'd like to get back to. STOP the procrastinating and let's get Justice For Caylee done. I have a feeling deep down in your heart you want the same as we all do.

Update: Here we are on Day 24 of the trial and what have you accomplished so far? By now even you know that George and Lee didn't sexual abuse Casey. You also know Caylee didn't drown. FYI: Duct tape placed over the nose and mouth DOES NOT qualify as accidental death. You basically took your opening defense statement and flushed it down the toilet, right? You need to think before you speak....omitting the vital word "thoughts" before suicide was extremely important when you were interviewing Yuri. You should now realize that Judge Perry is a man with an abundance amount of patience. You are both doing your job....one better than the other but I'm thinking you might want to wear a shirt saying "overruled" to court each day. There is a rumor on some blogs stating you are playing the jury and playing dumb in order for Casey to get a faster appeal....we're on to you and I'm sure the jury is also. We can't give you that much credit....maybe Casey, not you. You are a very popular man at the moment....make yourself shine by doing the right thing not by saying the wrong thing. Good luck!

Update 6-21-11 ... Besides being held in contempt, annoying Judge Perry and arguing with Jeff Ashton your defense case is going nowhere. Absolutely nowhere. We've learned nothing new. I think you can do better. By the way what type of medication is your client on? She's on something.......it's obvious to all.......
Update 6-24-11 ... Impressing me....NO! Boring me...YES! Cindy perjuring herself to save her daughter??? That was WRONG of her and even the jurors could not possibly believe that performance. No reasonable doubt for me.
Update 6-29-11 ... Regarding questioning of George Anthony: In my opinion Mr Baez YOU are throwing in the towel and allowing George to tell the jury all the naughty little tidbits about Casey. You are not impressing anyone not even the jurors. George blatantly stated that Casey was guilty and YOU didn't object or sustain or strike. Way to go JB! I knew you would come around and join the rest of us.

Well I am sitting in downtown Port Au Prince, Haiti tonight and after a hellish day of assessing Monday's storm damage (that killed 20) and I decided to catch up on poor KC's little ol' murder trial. I cannot get the live stream here -- although I do get the audio sometimes.
I must say that your open letter to Jose was the one thing that gave me some light, some hope that common sense really does still exist. I only began following the case when it was clear it was going to trial .... I've been in Haiti since the earthquake so I was a little busy.
I think your advice/suggestions to Jose are quite eloquent.. not to mention the funniest I've ever read!! I too am not a lawyer and my dog Sam isn't a lawyer either but I bet we could have come up with a better routine than this one. I almost could feel sorry for KC and the UNSUNSHINE band (Jose as lead legal singer)... and then I remember the lies, the duct tape on Caylee's skull.... I don't feel sorry and even so, she is innocent until proven guilty and absolutely deserves a competent defense, which she is not getting from Jose.
So, with that I will sign off tonight.. feeling happy that the last thing my eyes saw was your advice to Jose and not the other things they had to see today!

Based on the number of his objections that have been overruled, Casey Anthony's attorney is earning the nickname "No Way, Jose."
I have never seen a judge allow a defense team to comfort a client to the extent that Judge Perry is allowing in the Casey Anthony trial. A court of law is supposed to be about the evidence and testimony. I don't think it has a place in a fair trial and in a court of law.

I'm addicted to the trial, I'm not going to lie!! Baez is the biggest joke of a defense atty I have ever seen!! The best is when he asks for a recess so he can get a file!!! I don't know how Judge Perry hasn't lost it yet with Baez! And how he says he's done with questions for the witness, then goes back for a couple more! Duh! Did you just think these up, why aren't you prepared?! You have your yellow note pad, is there nothing on it?!?!? LOL

Even if he did have a TIVO he might not know how to operate it. OK I'm being hard on the guy, but he really brought it upon himself. An over-inflated ego has no place in the courtroom.

Lawyers like him make me sick....I'd knock the **** out of him if I had anything to do with that trial....Most lawyers are in it for themselves...I have a few friends that are lawyers, but are in it for the sake of helping people. Part of me thinks Jose' is in "cahoots" with Casey. I don't think they had ANY defense to speak of, so I think Jose' just may have planted the drowning idea in Casey head as a "possible cause of death" once the coroner could not issue an exact cause of death with what was left of little Caylee's body. And the lying had to be explaned SOMEHOW, so what else could possibly work other than to say she had been abused by her dad and brother. If that was the case, why then once she was an adult and able to leave, didn't she? Why would she even let either of those so called sex abusers anywhere near her daughter knowing what she had been through? ALL LIES, and I honestly think Baez knows the defense is just more lies contrived to cover up the first set of lies. On an on. I think Casey had nothing to lose with this STORY, and Jose' is trying to make a name for himself. Boy o boy, is he making a name for himself. Congrats Jose', hope you can sleep at night knowing that you are defending a killer and taking tax payers money to do it! As for Casey, there is a special place for baby killers waiting for you. For the Anthony family, may God's grace grant you peace and justice and the strength to get through this horrible time. And Caylee, sweet baby girl, you were taken way too soon and all who's lives you touched have been truly blessed. You are in heaven now little angle where the playgrounds are abundant and lollipops and dandilions are yours for the picking. God is surely bouncing you on his knee and may the sounds of your laughter be heard by all who have loved you and always will. God Bless you.

Casey and her lawyer are perfect for one another. They both lack common sense. I would love to be a fly on the wall in one of their lawyer/client meetings.

Read Baez' bio. He's never been closer than second chair to real lawyers on any case. He's a total sham and no way should be the lead defense lawyer in a high profile case, such as this. To say the least it's the trial of the decade.
Sunshine, well said. If Jose Baez expects to continue his career after this trial, he should listen to your suggestions and make some changes in his approach. It's clear that Casey has duped him with her story, just like she has duped people in the past. It's about Caylee not Casey, George, Cindy, or Lee Anthony. Caylee is the one wronged here, not Casey.
I hope Mr. Baez is reading this. Maybe just maybe he will stop the BS and start doing his job. He might start by coming to the court prepared. The biggest mistake he has made in his career is taking Casey's case. He is not capable of handling a capital case. I question his ability to handle a traffic ticket.
Please compile his infamous questions and quotes. My recent favorite is "Did she commit suicide?", asking Melich about Casey.

Nothing has been mentioned about the numerous bloopers he made in the infamous "opening statement."....Am I the only one who picked up on his dually-stupid comment? Listen to it again: "Casey has a brother who wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. He too attempted to sexually molest Casey, although, IT DIDN'T GO AS FAR.......in the VERY next sentence, he says: "IT GOT SOOO BAD, THE F.B.I. DID A DNA TEST TO SEE IF HE WAS CAYLEE'S FATHER." Yes fpherj I did pick up on his dumb accusation of Lee. even Jose knew how wrong he was which is why during his cross-examination for Lee there wasn't a peep said about sexual abuse. JB really messed up with his opening statement BUT it planted a seed in the jurors head while the case continued that it was full of lies and holes. Justice For Caylee!!! Thank you for your comment.

I agree with everything you stated, EXCEPT plead insanity. If Jose Baez just pleaded insanity for Casey at LEAST it would make some sense. Even if she had to lie about it (No pun intended). But yes Mr Baez is NOT giving her effective counsel and should she get convicted, this may go up in appeals as ineffective counsel. He's not qualified for this. Justice for Caylee!

Yeah..this trial is basically a comedy to me. The State is being serious, they have all the evidence to prove Casey did it, and her defense team tries so pitifully hard to debunk the evidence. I think yesterday, when Bozo asked The Forensic guy if he photoshopped the skull with Caylee's face to get to the emotions of the jury, was the DUMBEST thing he could have asked thus far. Course the witness' cold and calculated answers where awesome. Also, they aren't coaching Casey good enough. If I were up there, and truly innocent, I would have to be escorted out b/c I'd be hysterical. She's got the croc tears down.

I am so sick of watching Casey crying. I, like everyone else, question whether she is really crying. But it doesn't really matter since I truthfully believe that if she is crying it is completely for herself and the freedom she has lost. I think when I look at Casey, I am truly looking at the face of EVIL.

I will read them, law is a passion of mine. I almost went to law school but computers seemed to be a little more lucrative way to make money for less hours at the time. For some reason I was always drawn to bankruptcy law and how to avoid getting everything taken in the event that your business does fail. you know much about that subject?

Jose's attempt at being another Johnnie Cochrane have failed miserably, just like his attempts at being a bikini salesman did.
I think, after viewing him far too much recently, he might have more success were he to venture into a career as a ventriloquist.
If anyone is worried about this turning into an acquittal read a synopsis of the Scott Peterson case. He is on death row with one piece, and only one piece of circumstantial evidence, a single hair on a pair of pliers in his boat. And it was only a 1 to 110 to one chance of it belonging to someone else. His lying was not quite as blatant as Casey Anthony, but it was a factor. He is in San Quentin , and she belongs in a similar place. Lock her up and throw away the key. An absolute Monster.
Gil the Scott Peterson case is an excellent example for this case! What he did was heartless and cruel and he also killed his wife and unborn child for "the good life" !! Thank you so sharing.

Baez is a joke of an attorney; constantly unprepared and he should be one embarrassed attorney but, alas, he, like Caylee are too arrogant to see even that. Seems I read he had his own legal problems and was not admitted to the Bar for 5 or six years due to his own child support failure and writing bad checks. So, there you go....now we know who he really is!!
Why on earth does Cheney Mason and the other high priced babysitter at the defense table help Mr. Baez? I truly believe that it an plan.

Impressive article!!! I've been following the trial and in my opinion the state did an amazing job from day 1. The defense should listen to the Judge's secret tips and then maybe he'll get it. Justice for Caylee.
Jose Baez is playing dirty, and the Anthonys' are in on it. But, as a mother I understand I would not want my child put to death. I hope at the end that we all remember this is about a little girl who was dumped like garbage and forgotten by her mother for 31 days. Casey should spend the rest of her life in jail and Baez on the unemployment line. OH I forgot, maybe we will be lucky and he will be found in contempt and spend some time next to Casey's cell, even one day would please me.

I thought that was stated. 2nd. question: When Cindy raved about how "thrilled & excited" they were in discovering Casey was pregnant (at 7 or 8 months, DUH!) she went on to name ALL the people they called to make the grand ANNOUNCEMENT...Family, neighbors, friends, co-workers, fellow members of their church....you name them, they were told Casey is preganant!! 1. LEE was the one and only person they managed to keep it a secret from? How could he possibly have avoided hearing it or eventually FIGURING IT OUT?? Did he go through a period of being BLIND, DEAF & DUMB? Or did he fall off the face of the earth? Does Jose really think that Lee's testimony could prove the family has SECRETS and are dysfunctional??? Yes, they're dysfunctional....but they are dysfunctional in dozens of ways and have been...obviously forever. Casey's preganancy was not the only thing they've been in denial of since her birth. They were WELL aware of her sociapathy.

I agree with the announcements. Cindy's and Lee's testimonies were a waste of trial time and taxpayers money, if I was a juror I would be so upset with Baez right now for wasting SO MUCH TIME!!!

When all is said and done....(fairly soon now!) This is a truly tragic tale on so many levels. Caylee's death of course, the most horriffic........but it has also brought so very much to light and we all must be in deep thought these days. Family dysfunction at the level of the Anthonys' is a bit much to wrap one's brain around. The theme song for this trial....amongst many possibilities.....could very well be, "The Apple does Not Fall far from the Tree." I have so much to say, my mind reels. In the days to come, I will be so grateful for this ....and all the participants. Until next time. I hope my heart holds up during the verdict!!

While I do not envy Mr. Baez or the job that he has had to do in this case, he has not done himself any favors in terms of the public's perception of him. It is my hope only that the actions of the attorneys have not prevented justice from being done in this case.

I dont know how Casey can be convicted of first degree murder because there are some aspects of this case that just do not make sense. Beyond that there is no definative evidence that she did it, only specualation and circumstantial evidence.

I have not been following... I have a young daughter and have no interest in hearing anymore than the daily crap already in the news. However, I did like the way you have presented it with the feelings I would have mixed with a little humor. So thanks for that. I am looking to add a little more positive stuff to my life and cutting down on the amount of news I am watching these days. Jury in deliberation. Dear Jose, I don't believe anyone will ever accuse you of not putting all of your blood, sweat & time into your defense of Casey. Unfortunately, all due respect, Sir, you neglected to also utilize the good brain God gave you. WHAT were you thinking? Even IF Casey suffered (sexual) abuse at the hands of her father (which few people believe).....PLEASE explain how the result of that abuse can be linked in any way to a mother killing her own precious child....with her bare hands, bind her, wrap her, stuff her and then dump her in a garbage-laden swamp........and for 31 days & nights thereafter, go shopping, rent movies, doll up and go out partying.....drink, dance, sleep-in with more than 2 or 3 "boyfriends"....???? I know you have children, Jose. I ask you, Sir, if your child's MOTHER committed such an atrocious, unforgiveable act....would you beg that she be found NOT guilty....for the same reasons, with the same vigor as you defended this murderer? I understand all about her Constitutional right to a Fair & Speedy Trial and to be defended as innocent until proven guilty by a Jury of her peers.....Although you did this as a LAWYER......could you do it as a human being and a father? Sunshine...Aware that is the popular belief and cause for nail-biting.....but, the majority of those jurors have the near-impossible task of dealing with TWO jurors who CLEARLY stated they DO NOT BELIEVE IN "JUDGING OTHERS." The real question is....HOW WERE THEY EVEN ALLOWED TO BE CHOSEN? That's precisely what JURORS do.......decide JUDGEMENT! More stupidity

The defense chose them....they've got to be able to see the truth along with the other jurors or else they will be deliberating forever!!!! Not many notes were taken by the jurors which is a good sign that their minds were already made up. Time will tell.
Hmmmmm..great point, (about the reason for lack of note taking) never thought of that reason (duh).....I kept thinking it was because they were overly focused on "listening & looking."...

Casey didn't even bury Caylee she placed her in a bag and tossed her body over the underbrush on the side of the road. She didn't even take the time to walk around the underbrush and gently place her on the ground...she threw her away like trash. Our legal system _ _ _ _ _ !!
Here's what I think the community should do. The people that searched for Caylee, should bring a CIVIL lawsuit against Casey (and anyone else possibly involved) for wrongful death. If they unite as a community they will have more power t...hen they know. Has anyone ever heard of Case Law. Why not try to overturn the jurors decision, demanding a change in law. How many times do we have to see this current process fail.....

As far as the Casey Anthony verdict, I was very surprised with the verdict. As a parent, I was disappointed. I just want to remind people that our criminal justice system in the United States focuses on protecting people from being wrongfully convicted.
Since 2000, more than 200 people have been exonerated with DNA testing. Out of these exonerations,more than 120 actual perpetrators have been identified and corroborated with DNA evidence.
I stand by my word. Most are BUT some also have a heart and for them it's not all about the almighty dollar.
An interesting take! I watched 90% of the trial and was intrigued by Baez. Especially so when after the verdict, in the press conference, he started talking spanish. Did anyone understand what he was saying? I was wondering what was said.

Pinkchic18....I'll try to help. If I'm not mistaken, Jose Baez was born in Puerto Rico....but his dialect does not sound exactly like that of Puerto Rican parents. I know he speaks Spanish & Portuguese, so if his mother (who raised him) is Portuguese, that explains the subtly different dialect...which I translated in general as a personal message to his mother & family members from him and his wife & daughter. He made a statement about "a moment of pride and gratitude for his victory in the verdict for his client.....his love & gratitude to his mother, family, etc. for believing in him.....yadda yadda uadda. That's as best I can do for you.

Jose Baez.. I don't even know what to say about this man. I don't know how he (or any of that defense team) can sleep at night. I can't believe he said he could go home the night the verdict was read (after the champagne party) and tell his little girl that he saved a life today! He is as delusional as Casey Anthony. What he did was free a criminal who can have another baby to kill. He SICKENS me. The WHOLE defense team sickens me. What they did to that family just to free that monster- they have some karma coming too.

The baby is with his current wife, I assume. Anyway...he's obviously staunch anti-capital punishment. As upset as I am w/ the way this all turned out.....I'm also sure the State OVER-charged her.....don't you think so? If they had gone for felony murder, I STILL believe they'd have nailed her. Yes, Sunshine....OJ wound up ultimately where he belonged long ago. and he did this to himself just by continuing to be the ignorant A** he is.....once you've gotten away with murder, these idiots get cocky and think they are untouchable. Problem is, all eyes will be on her for the rest of her life. She will not be able to get a parking ticket w/o everyone knowing where she was, what she did, who she was with and what was said. I understand there are plans to take her out of the country for major facial cosmetic surgery and her identity will also be completely transformed to include phony birth certif, SSN.& name change...just as is done in the witness protection program. This will only prove to extend the amount of time it takes for people to discover her new identity and be able to recognize her anyway. Unfortunately, she can't trade in her evil mind or cold heart. Being able to share our outrage and frustration with one another has helped us through an otherwise unbearable journey. Although we must learn to live with the insanity of the verdict.....the brunt of the repercussions now belong to Casey Anthony. You may want to watch and listen as she is introduced to Karma in a very powerful way. Her little fanatasy world of lies and imaginary people....her sociopathic behavior...will in no way protect her from the ravages of Karma's wrath. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has suffered anger and depression over this...we just have to help each other get through. I feel so silly because I've never let myself be this affected over people I do not even know. I so agree about karma. Casey Anthony will get what's coming to her. That's the thing I know deep down and can bring some peace to my heart. Run and hide all you want Casey Anthony but you CAN NOT escape Karma! It's real and it's coming for YOU.

I'm honored that I could offer a place where fellow friends and followers are able to share their concerns and thoughts with each other. There are so many of us who are frustrated and upset with the outcome of this trial. We just have to keep thinking KARMA ... we need to be patient. Think OJ and Jaron van der Sloot. Try not to allow CA to control your emotions. Use those emotions in a positive way....eliminate the negative. it could be something as simple as sharing a smile with a toddler and remembering Caylee. Your points about common sense and just being a responsible professional go far beyond this case, but can be used for the world around us! I'm interested in the trial but I get very un-interested when he starts asking questions. He needs to go back to law school and learn a thing or two... and Zanny the Nanny can just be called "Zanny". He said THE NANNY every time!! She wasn't even a real person!!! oh geesh
