My Letter To Stress

Hey Stress, We need to talk. Do you realize how annoying you are? You aren't a friend. You are a foe. You have a tendency to pop up when least expected and you always overstay your welcome. Haven't you ever heard of the golden rule about phoning before a visit? Maybe I'm too busy for you, or possibly not up to entertaining. It's rude to just show up and stick around while I'm trying to work.

How about we make a truce? I'll call you over when I want you to visit. Don't expect a call anytime soon though! You are irritating and not very kind. I think it's time we end our relationship. No hard feelings. You go your way and I'll go mine. We could take what we have learned during your visits and go from there. I've picked up a few tricks of the trade on how to deal with you. So, bite me!

I've learned that I shouldn't allow you to control me. There are days when you might have the upper hand, but I've learned that I also do. I learned that laughter is beneficial to make you go away, but you don't like that. Oh well. I also learned that a really good workout not only burn calories, but burns you away! You think you are so smart, but you aren't.

I could allow you to torment me or I could brush you away. OK, there are some days when you don't go away as easily. I've considered turning to alcohol, but opted out due to the useless calorie intake. I've considered medications, but opted out due to the fact that I wouldn't remember to take them...due to being stressed. I've considered slapping you upside the head, but that would only hurt me!

I've learned different ways to relax to avoid you. I play with my granddaughter and her friends. I listen to them tell me stories and I watch them play. Those precious moments place things into perspective for me. Watching children play and listening to them laugh reminds us of the joy in life. I also learned that going shopping will keep you away. You don't like to shop obviously because you never visit me while I am browsing the aisles. The word on the street is that crying releases stress. Seriously? Who has time to cry? You are such a nuisance!

You don't have many fans. That's sad. You are an unwanted visitor to many. Have you considered lightening up a bit and backing off? Have you considered playing in traffic? Taking a long walk off a short pier? Jumping in a lake? Those sound like wonderful options that you might want to take into consideration. How about jumping off a bridge? Or taking a hike among a pack of wolves? Take your pick or better yet do them all!

You cause many needless health issues. High blood pressure, weight gain, irregular heartbeats, anxiety disorders, facial twitches, premature aging...need I go on? Did you know that up to 90 percent of visits to the doctor are caused by visits from you? Yep, you are the culprit! How rude! Not only are you making people sick, but you are making doctors richer! Shame on you! Did you know that the majority of people who take anti-depressants aren't depressed, they are stressed! Guess who caused their ailments? One guess...YOU!

I will give you credit for one thing. Only one. You do remind us that we are still alive and breathing when we need to deal with you. Must you be so brutal though? Bits and spurts every now and then might be OK, but there is no need to go full force ahead. We need to learn to control you better. We need to learn how to de-stress. We need to train our brains to avoid you. Diet, exercise, meditation, yoga, medication all seem to work. Chewing gum also helps! The chewing motion sends a soothing message to the brain. In other cases alcohol and drugs work. I do not encourage unhealthy lifestyles. In the meantime I will do my best to avoid you because you can be a downer. I apologize if I was a bit rough with you. Not really! Be gone! Scoot! Move along. Don't watch out for traffic! Bye-bye!

Song to help reduce stress!

Release your stress here...

Great piece on a killer. Stress has such a huge impact on health, happiness and life. You are right on the mark, sunshine. We do have a choice in allowing stress to consume us or learning to effectively deal with it. I am looking for ways now to dampen its pervasive effects on me. Next, I'm going to check out your video. Thank you for this very important, thought-provoking read.

Literally love your literate letter, Sunshine. Thanks for the stress avoidance tips.

I have found one of the best ways to deal with it is simply remember that spelled backwards, 'stressed' is 'desserts.' Then I go get me some, and Voila! stress is gone.

Linda...

First...to your acknowledgement...yeah stress can make you feel alive...so can laying on a beach in the sun, however. That's my preference.

I endorse working out, laughing, and self-medication, and good frozen pizza.

Stress SHOULD play in the street!

@Susan I find humor in just about anything. I'm serious, that's not a laughing matter!:)

@Thomas I agree with the beach but being stressed does remind us that we are alive and kicking! I hope it listens to us and goes to play in traffic. The busier the street the better! :)

Really enjoyed reading your hub. It seems people now are more stressed than ever before. You are so right about such high numbers visiting their

doctor for a stress related illness too. Doctors are good at asking 'are you stressed' but many wouldn't think to suggest how to de-stress!

.

The Misunderstandable 12 days ago

Sometimes people live to make other happy, and they later find that others do not valaorate wht you do, or make you feel that what you do it's not enough to succeed, but we forget that we are important too, and we need to release what makes us sad and depressed, because all of that leads to desperation, and therefore, stress.

Sunshine625 profile image

Sunshine625 Hub Author 12 days ago

Very valid points Misunderstandable. Release it daily! Find a way that benefits you and find the time to practice the stress release method. Mine is exercise. It works great!
